The Adjustable Bed

The adjustable bed allows the sleeper to move the bed itself to allow for the head or feet to be at a different angle from the rest of the body.  The medical terminology for the use of this style of bed with patients is the Fowler Position.  Most adjustable beds allow a semi-Fowler position with the head or feet at a 30-45% angle.

Health Benefits of an Adjustable Bed

The adjusted positions of the adjustable bed allows for more open airways and easier breathing at night.   This may assist with snoring or respiratory blockage.  The ability to adjust or raise your feet and legs with the adjustable bed, can aide with circulatory problems as well as joint and muscle pains.

Back pain and acid reflux can both benefit from the incline of the adjustment of the head of the bed.  Proper posture and circulation benefits can have a positive effect for a number of medical conditions including heart, asthma and arthritis.

Tempur-Pedic® Advanced Ergo System™ Adjustable Beds

The adjustable bed system offered by Tempur-Pedic® is the Advanced Ergo System™.  The Advanced Ergo System™ comes with a wireless remote with 4 preset positions and an engineered process to prevent the drop to flat experience.  It includes a built in massage system with improved wave quality.  It features a heavy duty frame designed to support more weight, with more base support legs than traditional beds and an aesthetic frame design.  The lift motor system is designed to be quiet, reliable and upgradable.  It uses a “state of the art” Programmable Logic controller (PLC) with metal housings instead of plastic.  It has a wall hugging design to allow you to stay close to your night stand.  The Advanced Ergo System™ comes with a 20 year limited warranty with no trial period and is non-returnable.  This system runs $1400 for a Twin to $2800 for a King (split).

Memoryfoam.com® BetterRest 7500™ Adjustable Bed

In comparison, Memoryfoam.com® uses a German made product called the BetterRest 7500™ by Jobri.  Memoryfoam.com® rates this system as one of the best engineered adjustable beds in the world.  It is designed to support even higher weight sleepers.  It offers a dual construction frame for greater support and durability.  The BetterRest 7500™ also features a built in massage component.  This adjustable bed has a 450 pound weight limit.  It also offers present positions and unlike the Tempur-Pedic® it offers head and foot board attachments. It also uses a whisper quiet lift motor.  It however, offers a 30 year warranty instead of the 20 year limited warranty offered by Tempur-Pedic®.

The differentiating factor for the BetterRest 7500™ is the German engineered Dual Roller construction which allows for two rolling hydraulic motors instead of one.  The BetterRest 7500™ massage unit is independent in the head and foot area.  It also features both preset and programmable positions including a zero gravity position.  The BetterRest 7500™ also uses the wall hugging design to allow you to be close to the nightstand.  The Memoryfoam.com adjustable bed runs from $1299 for a Twin size to $2999 for a King or California King.

Compare TempurPedic® Swedish Mattress Overlay™ to Memoryfoam.com® 5 Pound Topper™

Past and Present:  Brand Leaders

When Memory Foam was initially developed in 1966 it was as a commissioned product for NASA to improve safety and product astronauts during space travel.  Commercially it was introduced as medical cushioning and as padding for disabled patients as it was effective in eliminating the pain and discomfort from long term immobility.  This benefit translated into mattress and mattress topper design in the 1990s.

The pioneer in the mattress industry with Memory Foam was Tempur-Pedic®.  The company spent millions to market the new non-innerspring style mattresses and related accessories.  This branding effort has resulted in such a strong branded identity that the product is often referred to by the brand name Tempur-Pedic® much in the way that Jell-O ® is the common name for gelatin.  But times are changing; the Memory Foam products and service commitments from the competition have surpassed the legacy of past performers.

As an informed consumer it is important to compare the benefits of the market leader with other competitors including the price – value factor are you getting the best bang for your buck?

Mattress Toppers Face Off

Mattress toppers have been designed to allow the consumer to experience all the benefits of Memory Foam without the investment in a complete mattress set. Memory Foam is known for its health benefits for those suffering from back pain, fibromyalgia, joint and muscle pain as the pressure point contact of innerspring mattresses is replaced by the high energy air flow of the Memory Foam.

Tempur Pedic® offers a Swedish Mattress Overlay™ which is 3 inches thick and is designed to be an alternative in areas where the complete mattress system is not practical.  The Swedish Mattress Overlay™ ranges in price from $532 for a Twin size to $948 for a California King.   The Overlay is not returnable and has no try out period.  There is a $75 shipping charge for the continental US and additional charges for other states.  Tempur-Pedic® offers a 5 year warranty on the Swedish Mattress Overlay™.

Memoryfoam.com® offers a 5 pound Memory Foam Mattress Topper™ as 5 pounds is considered to offer the best benefit for the consumer.  The 5 lb density offers solid benefits in terms of pressure relief and then selected height will determine the level of softness and luxury experienced.  While Memoryfoam.com® offers 2 inch to 4 inch heights in Mattress toppers with the 2 inch recommended for children and 4 inch recommended for larger people or those seeking the maximum benefit from pressure relief.  The 3 inch height Memoryfoam.com® Mattress Topper which compares to Tempur-Pedic® Swedish Mattress Overlay’s™ 3 inch height runs from $249 for a Twin to $499 for a California King.  Memoryfoam.com® offers a 90 trial and a 10 year warranty.  This product is made in the US and offers COOL-TEK technology which allows you to sleep cool on Memory Foam.  Memoryfoam.com® offers free shipping.

If the product meets the pressure relief needs, has double the warranty, allows you to test the product for 90 days, isn’t that the best bang for your buck?

Don’t Overpay for the Tempur-Pedic ClassicBed

The Tempur-Pedic ClassicBed is one of Tempur-Pedic’s oldest and most popular mattresses. At $1699 for a queen size mattress, though, it is extremely overpriced. MemoryFoam.com offers the Classic Mattress with the same pressure-relieving feel for $1000 less.

Medium Firmness Feel offers Fantastic Support
Both the Tempur-Pedic ClassicBed and the MemoryFoam.com Classic 8” are medium firmness mattresses. This firmness is perfect for those who like to feel the support in their mattress.

Both beds have solid base layers that support the 3”+ of viscoelastic memory foam. Both beds also have airflow layers that assist in heat dissipation.

Benefits of Memory Foam

The benefits of memory foam are nearly endless. The pressure relieving qualities of memory foam are unmatched by any other type of foam or mattress. It is important to choose a memory foam produced here in the USA; both Tempur-Pedic and MemoryFoam.com use only US made memory foam.

Differences in the TempurPedic Classic Bed and the Classic 8”

While the sleep experience, durability, and quality are nearly identical, there are a few key differences.
COOL-TEK Technology. This proprietary technology by MemoryFoam.com keeps you cooler than other mattresses by utilizing a COOLMAX cover, special airflow layer, and a special open-cell formulation.

ECO-CELL memory foam. The Classic 8” uses a natural, soy-based memory foam that goes through a manufacturing process that’s much more earth-friendly. There are much fewer carcinogens in our memory foam, and there is no awful smell produced by the off-gassing many Tempur-Pedic owners experience.

Tempurpedic Rhapsody Bed vs MemoryFoam.com Rhapture HD
Nov 26 2009 0
Comments

The TempurPedic Rhapsody Bed and the MemoryFoam.com Rhapture-HD are both 12” thick medium to medium-firm memory foam mattresses produced in the USA, with 7.0+lb/ft3  density memory foam (also known as HD foam). The Rhapture-HD™ is about half the price, and (unlike Tempur-HD foam) is produced with environmentally friendly ECO-CELL™ and ECO-CELL HD™ memory foam.

About the Tempurpedic Rhapsody Bed

The 12” Tempurpedic Rhapsody Bed is one of Tempurpedic’s top selling memory foam mattresses, and their #1 selling luxury bed. It was introduced approximately 4 years ago due to large demand by individuals requesting extra pressure relief. It is also made to reduce the amount of heat retention that a mattress has.

The Tempurpedic Rhapsody Bed has a firmness somewhere between medium and medium firm. There is a variation associated with the temperature of the room that the Rhapsody Bed is kept in. Cold rooms will give the mattress a firmer feeling, while warmer rooms will give the mattress a softer feeling.

The two most striking features in our review of the Tempurpedic rhapsody mattress were the unique, luxurious cover and the use of Tempur-HD memory foam. This is a very recognizable bed.

The cover is made with a woven textile that has a cooling effect, similar to an Under Armour or Coolmax material. The side of the cover has
The Tempurpedic Rhapsody has 1.2” of Tempur-HD memory foam in the top layer of the mattress. Tempur-HD is a Tempurpedic’s version of high-density viscoelastic memory foam. It has a 7.2lb/ft3  density, and is better at relieving pressure than the standard Tempur Foam. It is known to be more conforming. It is firmer to the touch than standard Tempur foam.

Below the Tempur-HD layer is the standard Tempur support memory foam layer. There is 2.8” of Tempur support foam in the tempurpedic rhapsody mattress. This layer provides a nice conforming support effect for the Tempur-HD layer above it. Tempur foam is 5.3lb/ft3  density. It is considered the gold standard as far as density is concerned, although it is known for being too soft in warm rooms, and too firm in cooler rooms.

The memory foam layers sit on top of (2) 4” 1.8lb/ft3 density base layers. These are standard polyurethane base foam layers. They contain convoluted (egg-crate like) tops which act as airflow layers. The top airflow layer does serve to keep the bed a little cooler, while the lower airflow layer is pretty much useless, and only serves as a selling point for salesmen.

It is a fantastic mattress, but is needlessly expensive.

About the Rhapture-HD™ by MemoryFoam.com

The Rhapture-HD™ is produced to nearly identical specifications of the Tempurpedic Rhapsody. We use an eco-friendly 8lb ECO-CELL HD™ memory foam instead of the dirty 7lb Tempur Foam. The covers are basically the same, with a Coolmax material in the top of ours, and identical microsuede sides. Both beds come with airflow layers, strong warranties, and provide unmatched comfort relieving experiences.

The big difference comes in price. Try the Rhapture-HD™ today and see why so many people are choosing us over the national brand.

Memory Foam Mattresses – Consumer Reviews Guide
Nov 01 2009 0
Comments

Memory Foam Mattresses have been in the public consumer market since the 1980s when the product commissioned for NASA safety was converted to a consumer good for mainstream sales.

Polyurethane foam injected with elements to build elasticity and create air cells in the foam is developed into various sizes, layers and styles to create Memory Foam Mattresses.

Buyer Recommendations for Mattress Shopping

The Better Sleep Council offers the S-L-E-E-P test when shopping for a mattress. The acronym stands for:

S- Select
L- Lie on it in your normal sleep position
E- Evaluate the level of comfort and support
E- Educate yourself about each selection
P- Partners should test the beds together

The mattress must meet your needs in the following areas of: comfort, support, durability and space.  The Better Sleep Council reports that the average healthy sleep tosses and turns 40-50 times per night.  The mattress need to support all this movement, the pressure related to the movement and the impact on the partner sleeper if any .

Memory Foam Mattress Basics

Indentation Force Deflection

In order to establish a uniform quality standard, the memory foam mattress uses the Indentation Force Deflection (IFD) rating. This rating is the amount of force required to move a 4 inch thick sample of foam to 25% of its thickness.   The IFD is the best metric to compare mattress to mattress, but it is not always available and the composite mattress which encompasses both foam and standard bedding, quilting and support framing can’t be measured with one IFD rating.  The density of the foam is a more universal metric for comparison.

Density

For the Memory Foam Mattress, density comes down to the more dense the more expensive the mattress.  However, the most expensive are not always the best values.  The mid-range of 3-5 pounds of density is considered to be the best choices.

The denser foams will hold the impression longer. To get the “memory” factor the foam should be at least 3 pounds, but in the higher or more expensive density foams the long lasting impression could create some discomfort for sleepers that move from position to position during the night.

The 2 pound foams that generally come from China will offer only “slight” memory qualities; and is generally not recommended.

Height

The Memory Foam Mattress can be 10-12 inches in height but not all of that height will be memory foam.  In general, there will be about 4 inches of memory foam on a base of polyurethane foam or latex foam.  The most luxurious of Memory Foam Mattresses are this combination of Memory Foam and Latex Foam.

Top it Off

Memory foam toppers which can be 1-3 inches in height can add softness to a traditional mattress.

Notes

The Memory Foam Mattress may not be the best fit for you.  If you sleep “hot” the warmth of your body will make the foam softer and more pliable, which may not be the same density you had in mind when testing it.

If you live in a damp area, or experience night sweats, the foam mattress will not accommodate moisture well, it will break down the foam quickly.

If you weigh more than 250 pounds, the 5-10 year lifetime of the memory foam mattress will be dramatically reduced.  You may want to layer memory foam toppers.

Tempurpedic Mattress Guide
Nov 01 2009 0
Comments

In 1998, NASA inducted the Tempur-Pedic® Mattress into the Space Technology Hall of Fame as “for successfully using NASA technology to create economic opportunity and promote a better quality of life for humankind – in both the consumer and medical sector” .

Swedish scientists modified the technology that had been developed for NASA to reduce injury in space travel to a revolutionary new mattress material which was tested in Swedish hospitals before being released to European and North American markets.

Patented Design

One of the unique aspects of the Tempur-Pedic® Mattress design is the layers of foam that create the Tempur-Pedic® Mattress.  The top layer or the comfort layer is designed to react quickly to your body weight and temperature.  Under this layer is the Support Layer, designed to provide a more supportive sleeping environment and finally there is an Air Flow Layer which allows for greater comfort in the mattress.

The Tempur material is composed of open air cells.  The cells are designed to move with your body, disbursing the pressure that is normally felt with the springs and coils of conventional mattress design.

The lack of pressure points, the contouring to the body and the reaction to heat and body weight are all part of the design elements that Tempur-Pedic® Mattress hails as their unique features.

The Company

Tempur-Pedic® Mattress Company was founded in 1992 and went public in 2003 surpassing the billion sales levels in 2007.  The economic downturn has impacted the company slightly but the last quarter of 2009 looks promising with more than $25 million in Net sales in the 3rd Quarter of 2009.

The company has 3 manufacturing locations New Mexico, Virginia and Denmark with company headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky.

The Tempur material formula is a tightly guarded secret.  The company currently represents 2% of the premium mattress market share.

The Product Line

The Tempur-Pedic® Mattress product line is extensive and includes the following sleep systems along with pillows and other products:

The TEMPUR® Collection
- The CelebrityBed
- The BellaFina Bed
- The DeluxeBed
- The ClassicBed
- The AdvantageBed
- The OriginalBed

The TEMPUR®-HD Collection
- The GrandBed
- The BellaSonna Bed
- The AlluraBed
- The RhapsodyBed

The TEMPUR-Cloud™ Collection
- TEMPUR – Cloud Supreme

The product line also includes an extensive collection of accessories including high thread count Egyptian cotton sheets and Micro Suede covers as well as sleep masks and slippers.

The product line comes with a 20 year warranty, well above industry averages and they also offer a 90 day try out period.

The product line is also treated to be allergen free as well as free from formaldehyde and CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) free.

Tempurpedic Reviews

While the TempurPedic Mattress rates well on the company customer satisfaction surveys especially in terms of satisfaction, many companies have created similar manufacturing and distribution models, minus the overhead that a big company inherently creates. One such company is Memoryfoam.com, which is able to produce what is essentially the same mattress in composition and layers as Tempurpedic, at approximately half the price.

Visco Elastic Foam Guide
Nov 01 2009 1
Comment

Memory foam was commissioned for development by NASA in 1966 to reduce impact and injury from space travel.  The open cell foam; or Visco Elastic Foam  was created by a new process of adding polyurethane to other elements to create high energy absorption, dense material which was able to distribute pressure and impact evenly and reduce pressure points.

Initial applications included medical pillows and cushions and seating cushions for disabled patients.  It eventually became the basis for a new style of bedding mattress that did not use the traditional coil or spring support, but used the “memory” or shape holding capacity of the open cell foam to cradle the sleeper and allow for individual sleep pattern support.

Tempur
One of the early forms of this memory foam was the development from Swedish scientists of Tempur-pedic® foam for mattress applications.  This product was inducted into the space technology hall of fame in 1998.

Memory Foam
The popularity of Visco Elastic Foam is seen in the wide applications of Memory Foam in support cushions, seating, helmet padding, mattresses and other applications.  Variations in density and height have created a wide range of products in Visco Elastic Foam with a competitive price.

The addition of Memory Foam toppers has created a nearly infinite set of possibilities for Visco Elastic Foam mattress combinations of support, comfort, luxury and air flow.

Benefits of Visco Elastic Foam
The benefit of Visco Elastic Foam is the “memory” element.  The product quality is measured in indentation depth of a 4 inch height foam sample.  The rating is based on the ability to reach 25% of the height of the 4 inch sample.  This indentation allows the foam to conform to the body shape, hug the sleeper and move with the body as it shifts in the night.

The Visco Elastic Foam is more firm when cool but softens as the body temperature and body weight affect the foam allowing a smooth transition as the sleeper moves or turns.

Applications of Visco Elastic Foam
New developments in Visco Elastic foam are being studied for the advanced energy absorption capabilities in automobile safety.  Using Visco Elastic foam as the material in head restraints is believed to reduce whiplash and other car crash related traumas.  The material is able to dissipate pressure of impacts and react to changes in temperature and shape dimensions.

Visco Elastic Foam is also used in automotive design to reduce interior noise and absorb vibrations and the related noise.

Memory foam is well known for its ability to eliminate pressure points for medical patients who are bed-ridden or disabled patients who are unable to shift in wheelchairs or other equipment.  The reduction in pressure point injury which can lead to bed sores has been well researched.  Memory foam or Visco Elastic Foam is well documented to reduce pain, bed sores and pressure injuries in long term care patients.

Mattress toppers and medical cushions are frequent applications for Visco Elastic or Memory Foam.
